Story: Flag Rugby Huge Success in Brock Township

Local youngsters can get an introduction to sport of rugby this summer at the Brock Rugby Club.

The Brock Rugby Club has started a new U8 non-contact flag rugby program for boys and girls born in 2001, 2002 and 2003. "We want to increase the number of children that are playing rugby," said program director Kevin Bagshaw.

"Our goal, eventually, is to run programs for kids under the age of eight right up to men's leagues. In the last three years we have had a great turn out for our flag rugby program. We are hoping that some of them will love the game enough to continue to play as teenages"

In addition to introducing kids to the sport and building fundamental skills, the program also focuses on physical activity, co-ordination and teamwork.

The season begins on Saturday, May 2 and runs for nine consecutive weeks and wraps up on June 27. Sessions will be held from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. each Saturday at the Brock Rugby Club on Regional Road 13 in Blackwater, just east of Highway 12. The cost of the program is $80, which includes insurance, a T-shirt and a year-end barbecue.

Mr. Bagshaw said the program is a break-even proposition for the club this year. "We wanted to keep the costs down so more kids could get involved."
